HELP US FUNDRAISE, REDUCE LANDFILL and HELP PEOPLE IN 3rd WORLD COUNTRIES
Without spending a Penny!
Recycling textiles for the good of the community and those those in 3rd world countries – Supported by The Storage Pod, Brooklands

The Cubs at 1st Weybridge have a message for YOU! Listen Here! – courtesy of RadioWey

In January 2012 1st Weybridge Scout Group are offering local residents a very easy and efficient way to recycle their unwanted clothing, thus ensuring it doesn’t end up as landfill plus helping to clothe those in 3rd world countries and raise funds towards their ongoing renovations works. Last year in May 2011 1st Weybridge Scout Group stopped over 500 bin bags size of textiles weighing just over 2 tonnes ending up as landfill and earned themselves £1123.50 for their efforts! This project was made possible due to huge support from the local public and businesses especially from Lionel Smith at The Storage Pod in Brooklands who arranged for the safe storage of the textiles.

Our target is to collect over 500 bags of textiles, so please let us have your old tea-towels, holey socks, worn jeans, wrong sized clothes, grown out of shoes / coats / hats / gloves, old bedding, handbags, curtains, bathroom mats, towels, blankets, sleeping bag etc – anything that is a textile from the list below we can take.

WE ARE COLLECTING (in ANY Condition) from Now until Thursday 22 March 2012
Clothing (Adults & Childrens including all underwear)
Curtains
Towels
Bedding
Handbags
Belts
Hats
Shoes

WHY?
To provide the community with an alternative solution to throwing away their unwanted clothing in a bin which ends up as landfill by offering a collection point or collecting direct from their home/place of work. And also to help raise funds for 1st Weybridge (Brooklands Own) Scout Group who are still raising funds for “Renovations Works at the HQ”. All donations gratefully received, the more we collect the more we can raise and the more you can help clothe those in 3rd world countries. Did you know that 12% of landfill is made up of textiles!

WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THE TEXTILES?
Every single item collected will be recycled. The wearable clothing, shoes, belts, hats and handbags will be reused by those in 3rd world countries, as will the bedding, towels, curtains. Any items that can’t be worn or used will be remade into clothes or other items – not a scrap is wasted. We use a company called “Phil the Bag” and you can read about our success story on their website.

DROP or COLLECT
Bags of textiles can left at 1st Weybridge Scout HQ on a Wednesday or Thursday or please call Debbie on 07931 945 282 to arrange a collection. Deadline for collections/drops is 23 March 2012.

WE AIM TO COLLECT AT LEAST 500 BAGS! Every Sock Counts!
So far we have collected over 430 Bags full of textiles – keep them coming in please. 1st Weybridge would not have been able to run this appeal without the help of The Storage Pod in Brooklands who are big on supporting community projects like our scout troops by kindly letting us store the bags free of charge.
Our first early Christmas present was from Tiny Toddlers, a local childcare company recommended by the Good Nanny Agency Guild, who has sourced offers of free labour to help us move forwards with our renovations work. Emma the owner of www.tinytoddlerschildcare.co.uk, saw our plea for help on Twitter and arranged help from a local building company with whom she has connections.

Our second early Christmas present was from Leigh Lush of www.premierheating.net who initially contacted 1st Weybridge Scouts offering his help with our Lego Fundraising Project. He met with the fundraising co-ordinator, Debbie Conibere, and offered to see if he could help source some toilet equipment. We are thrilled to report that Leigh has sourced 1st Weybridge Scout Group all the equipment we need to fit the two new toilet blocks at the HQ for free.

Our third early Christmas present has come from the Community Foundation for Surrey who have awarded 1st Weybridge Scout Group £1000 towards our renovations works.

Debbie Conibere, Fundraising Co-ordinator, excitedly reported, “1st Weybridge has been totally overwhelmed by the generosity of support for our renovations works and are thrilled that earlier in the month Emma from Tiny Toddlers Childcare sourced free labour, Leigh of Premier Heating has been able to kit out the new toilet blocks in the form of free toilets, sinks and more. The final icing on the cake was when a letter arrived with the Christmas Post informing us that we had been awarded a £1000 towards new windows from the Community Foundation for Surrey!”

“This means that over the Christmas period, when people still tucking into their Turkey Sandwiches, work will commence on our new toilet block, plus one of our huge windows will be replaced. When the Beavers, Cubs and their parents return in the New Year they will be greeted with sparkling new working toilets which is one of the best presents of all.”

These are three truly wonderful gifts which will really help our group with the renovation of our HQ, our aim is to have a beautifully renewed building that we can open for public use.

In early 2012 work will commence on the rest of the windows at 1st Weybridge Scout Groups HQ which will ensure our building holds in the heat instead of it escaping out of the broken windows. There is still a long way to go as the HQ needs rewiring, a new catering style kitchen, building of a disabled access ramp, redecoration and more, so there are lots more fundraising events planned for 2012.

If you can offer help of labour or materials then please contact Debbie Conibere on 07931 945 282, email debbie@1stweybridgescouts.org.uk or @1stWeybridge on Twitter

The 15th and 16th December 2011 has seen some very exciting developments for 1st Weybridge Scout Group renovations works. Over these past two days we have been given two wonderful early Christmas presents!

Tiny Toddlers, a local childcare company recommended by the Good Nanny Agency Guild, has sourced offers of free labour to help us move forwards with our renovations work.

These are two truly wonderful gifts which will really help our group with the renovation of our HQ, our aim is to have a beautifully renewed building that we can open for public use.

If you can offer help of labour or materials then please contact Debbie Conibere on 07931 945 282, email debbie@1stweybridgescouts.org.uk or @1stWeybridge on Twitter

We all enjoyed the Carol Singing and the children especially enjoyed the Jaffa Cakes and Hot Chocolate break which makes the whole experience that little bit special at this magical time of the year.

We hope you enjoyed our Carols as much as we enjoyed singing them.

The money raised is going towards our ongoing renovation works http://1stweybridgescouts.org.uk/save-our-scout-hut/

Just look at the amazing work that Andy and Leigh have made on the Scaled Down Model of our HQ in Lego! The scale model is being made at 8 lego studs to each 1 metre.

Great detail already including our brand new sign over the door, the very specific windows and layout is utterly brilliant guys.

Thanks to the generosity of Duncan from Bright Bricks (www.bright-bricks.com) who are supplying the lego bricks to make this fundraising project viable we really will have a brilliant team who are striving to help us raise much needed funds to renovate our HQ so that we can open it for both Scout and public use.

We are still looking for one special person or company who can help us by constructing the payment side of the website, the idea is that when a brick is sponsored the sponsor will see their brick on the building. There will also be the option to see every brick placed right up until the sponsor of their brick (i.e. sponsor of brick number 53 will see bricks from 1 to 53 placed in a little stop motion animation). We are going to take a picture of every brick placed and stream them together in an stop motion animation. So we are hoping we can find a special person or company who can help – so if you are that special person or company who feel they can donate their time to helping us make this fundraising venture possible I’d really love to hear from you.

Please contact Debbie on 07931 945 282 or email debbie@1stweybridgescouts.org.uk.
