Without spending a Penny!
Recycling textiles for the good of the community and those those in 3rd world countries – Supported by The Storage Pod, Brooklands

The Cubs at 1st Weybridge have a message for YOU!  Listen Here! – courtesy of RadioWey

In January 2012 1st Weybridge Scout Group are offering local residents a very easy and efficient way to recycle their unwanted clothing, thus ensuring it doesn’t end up as landfill plus helping to clothe those in 3rd world countries and raise funds towards their ongoing renovations works.  Last year in May 2011 1st Weybridge Scout Group stopped over 500 bin bags size of textiles weighing just over 2 tonnes ending up as landfill and earned themselves £1123.50 for their efforts!  This project was made possible due to huge support from the local public and businesses especially from Lionel Smith at The Storage Pod in Brooklands who arranged for the safe storage of the textiles.

Our target is to collect over 1000 bags of textiles, so please let us have your old tea-towels, holey socks, worn jeans, wrong sized clothes, grown out of shoes / coats / hats / gloves, old bedding, handbags, curtains, bathroom mats, towels, blankets, sleeping bag etc – anything that is a textile from the list below we can take.

WE ARE COLLECTING (in ANY Condition) from Now until Thursday 22 March 2012
Clothing (Adults & Childrens including all underwear)
Curtains
Towels
Bedding
Handbags
Belts
Hats
Shoes

WHY?
To provide the community with an alternative solution to throwing away their unwanted clothing in a bin which ends up as landfill by offering a collection point or collecting direct from their home/place of work.  And also to help raise funds for 1st Weybridge (Brooklands Own) Scout Group who are still raising funds for “Renovations Works at the HQ”. All donations gratefully received, the more we collect the more we can raise and the more you can help clothe those in 3rd world countries. Did you know that 12% of landfill is made up of textiles!

WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THE TEXTILES?
Every single item collected will be recycled. The wearable clothing, shoes, belts, hats and handbags will be reused by those in 3rd world countries, as will the bedding, towels, curtains. Any items that can’t be worn or used will be remade into clothes or other items – not a scrap is wasted.  We use a company called “Phil the Bag” and you can read about our success story on their website.

Bags of textiles can left at 1st Weybridge Scout HQ on a Wednesday or Thursday or please call Debbie on 07931 945 282 to arrange a collection. Deadline for collections/drops is 23 March 2012.
